Andhra Pradesh government is planning an underwater tunnel in river Krishna, about three-km long, for vehicular traffic in India’s newest state capital Amaravati. The Master Plan has this proposal which envisages a transparent road tunnel from beneath the river connecting the administrative capital with Vijayawada.
This is first ever such underwater road tunnel in the country and there are about 200 of them around the World. This will be a major tourist attraction. Prakasam barrage backwaters extend up to Gerry village near Ibrahmpatnam where the tunnel will come up.
Incidentally, the Union shipping ministry is already planning two such tunnels. While one of the tunnels connects Kakdwip and Sagar Island in West Bengal, the other links Chatham and Bamboo Flat in Andaman Nicobar islands.
