The India-Pakistan cricket match, however, put the people in dilemma in cities like Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada.
Cricket fans largely ignored the call by environmentalists to switch off lights between 8.30 p.m. and 9.30 p.m. and join the global community in the campaign aimed at bringing down the Earth’s temperature.
Ardent cricket lovers were glued to their television sets to catch the live action from Kolkata and did not really bother about the call to show commitment to the planet.
However, the environment conscious ensured that they don’t miss the game while demonstrating their commitment by switching off the lights.
The WWF also encouraged residents’ welfare associations to join hands in observing Earth Hour without missing the cricketing action.
In Hyderabad, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan also backed the Earth Hour initiative. All lights at Raj Bhavan, the official residence of the governor, were switched off. Lights in all the buildings located on 22 acres were switched off.
