The 2000 acre Begumpet ‘Old Airport’ may be very soon seized by Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB) due to property tax arrears. On Saturday, the airport was served a Tax notice of 1.2 Crore for this year. With this total pending property tax arrears mount to 12 Crore making it the biggest defaulter of SCB.
Airports Authority of India (AAI) is in no mood of paying the tax since the airport is not operational for commercial flights but SCB is in no mood of buying the argument. In fact some of tax arrears date back to 2008 when the airport is operational. SCB is also ready to revise the tax since the airport is not operational but AAI is not sitting across the table.
SCB is of the opinion that notices will not work anymore and is gearing up to serve the notice of attachment once the last date for tax payment is complete. It is known that the commercial operations of the airport were shut down after the opening of Shamshabad Airport.
